Ananas comosus

This pineapple was rooted from a pineapple top in October 2006. It took about 4 weeks in warm water for the roots to start growing, after which it was potted up in a mix of 30% potting compost, 30% coir, 20% composted bark chips and 20% perlite. It has been growing steadily since in my heated polytunnel with temperatures staying between 22-32°C (72-90°F). Humidity levels tend to be 45-65% and it has proven quite thirsty, usually requiring water every couple of days. Due to the low winter light levels here in the UK, it is also supllemented with a 400w metal hallide lamp, which is about 750mm/30" above the plant and is on for 16 hours per day. It receives a weak soluble fertilizer every 7-10 days.
