The Phoenix dactylifera has continued to grow at the slightly reduced speed during May. This suggests that the new location is responsible for the change, although the potting mix is a long time past it's best and may also be partially responsible. My previous experience with Phoenix palms suggests that they are generally fairly tolerant of old soil, as the roots seem to be able to cope with considerable abuse and unfavourable conditions. The reduced growth rate at least means that this palm can remain in it's current location for a little longer. I am hoping that it can remain in the polytunnel for one more winter before being moved outside, as it is still a little too small to cope with a UK winter unprotected. Otherwise there have been no changes to watering, feeding and environment and I don't envisage any changes until relocation becomes necessary.
