May has not been a good month for the Jubaea chilensis. After re-potting and moving this palm outside in April, the weather has taken a turn for the worse in May and much of the foliage has died. This is more of a problem for the Jubaea than the other outside palms, because it was already in poor health prior to the changes and now has very little green foliage with which to harness the sun's energy. This combined with the recent lack of sun has not been an ideal combination. After seeing a fairly healthy root system, when I re-potted, I was fairly optimistic for the recovery of the Jubaea, but now things are looking far less positive. I can only hope for an improvement in the weather in June and for some new growth to help stabilize this palm. There is a frond just starting to emerge, which is still green and I am hoping that this will be sufficient to halt the Jubaea's demise.
