My second ever palm purchased in February 2005. This palm grew well in my polytunnel until about April 2006, when I re-potted it and moved it to a different location, due to lack of space. Although still in my polytunnel, it was in a cooler, lower light area and it seemed to totally stop growing for about 3 months of more. I assumed it was shock from the re-potting and moving, but when it did start growing again, it did so very slowly and the new growth was very pale and unhealthy looking. Subsequent growth continued to be slow and leaves were getting brown areas before even being fully emerged. When I spoke with people more experienced with Jubaeas and shared pictures, most seemed to think it needed a larger pot, but I am a little skeptical, as it had been growing healthily in a smaller pot only a few months earlier. I suspect that it is a problem with the soil needing replacing, as it has become very silt like and hardens in the abscence of moisture. I suspect that as a result there is a lack of oxygen getting to the roots. Either way the remedy is the same, re-potting, so it may as well be into a larger pot. Unfortunately this will have to wait until the warmer weather arrives, as there is a lack of space in the polytunnel at the moment.
