I purchased seeds of four different Chamaedorea species in June 2006. I received 12 costaricana seeds and potted them all together in a 150mm (6") pot using a mixture of coir, sand and potting compost. The pot was watered then wrapped with cling film and left in my polytunnel with ambient temperatures of 22-32°C (72-90°F). By September seven had sprouted. These seemed to be the fastest growing of the four species and still looked healthy in October, by which time the first leaves had fully opened on some of the plants. During November the first leaves started to lose pigment, but still seemed to be growing well. Although I would normally associate the appearance with too much light, the plants were in a very low light position, so I moved the pot to a lighter position in the hope of an improvement in health. By December the second leaves were still forming, but had already started to lose pigment before fully opening, so I moved the pot back to it's previous location. Most of the plants seem to have stopped growing now, but there is still some green tissue in the stem, so I haven't totally given up on them. There are also the other ungerminated seeds in the pot, which may sprout this year.
