Chamaedorea cataractarum

I received this plant in August 2006 as an underpotted 1 US gallon plant. I repotted it into a large terracotta pot in September, where it has been growing happily in my heated polytunnel since. In January it started flowering for the first time, allowing me to identify it as a female plant. It has also produced a second flower bract in March. This plant is in one of the cooler areas of my polytunnel, still 18-28°C (64-82°F), where the relative humidity is 50-70%. It is also a fairly low light position and although this species can handle more light than most Chamaedorea, I'm quite happy for it t stay in that location until it outgrows the space. Unfortunately the leaves of the plant became covered with calcium deposits from my humidifaction system, making it look somewhat below it's best, but this should clear up fairly quickly with it's growth rate and habit. There is also a little leaf burn on one of the leaves that overhangs the heater, but I don't have an instant remedy for this without more space. I may eventually try this plant outside, although it is likely to require some protection on the coldest winter nights.
