Cycas panzhihuaensis

My first attempt at germinating Cycads. I bought just three seeds in October 2006 and put them each in a 150mm pot. I decided to experiment with different media, using perlite in one pot, coir in another and composted bark chips in the last. I watered each pot until water was coming out of the bottom of the pot and then wrapped each pot in cling film to retain the moisture. The pots were kept in my heated polytunnel with an ambient temperature of 25-32°C (77-86°F). It seems the seeds aren't particularly fussy about the media, as they all germinated very quickly with the first leaf of each plant fully formed before the end of November, at which point I started a weak fertilizing regime. Since then progress has not been so good. The plant in coir has produced two subsequent leaves, both of which stopped opening shortly after emerging. The plant in composted bark also formed two susequent leaves, one of which only had leaflets on one side and both of which have now burnt quite badly. The plant in perlite has been a little slower, opening it's second subsequent leaf in late February/early March, but all of the leaves seem OK, albeit a little malformed. I'm assuming the problems have been the result of excessive humidity, while I had my fogging system running. It will be interesting to see what happens to future leaves now the humidity is lower. This is the plant potted in composted bark.
